Wulantataer Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Central-Eastern Inner Mongolia. The naming section is located on the southern (right) bank of the Ulantatal Gully ~40 km northwest of Bayan Hot, Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia. Named by Wang Peiyu and Wang Banyue in 1992.
Synonym: Ulantatal Fm
Lithology and Thickness
Mainly a sequence of brownish red, orange-yellow sandy mudstone with lacustrine fine clastic rocks of muddy sandstone, containing abundant concretions and gypsum. The thickness is ~100 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It possibly has a disconformable contact with the underlying later Eocene (Huerjing Fm).
Upper contact
It possibly has an unconformable contact with the overlying upper Miocene or Quaternary at different localities respectively. Regionally, next younger unit is the Damiao Fm ?

Fossils
This formation yields abundant fossil mammals and those that have been studied mainly include more than 30 species such as Palaeoscaptor acridens, Amphechinus rectus, Ordolagus teilhardi, Desmatolagus pusillus, Sinolagomys kansuensis, Anomoemys lohiculus, Tsaganomys altaicus, Parasminthus tangingoli, Gobisminthus qiui, Shamosminthus tongi, Tataromys ulantatalensis, Leptotataromys gracilidens, Palaeogale sectoria and Eumeryx culminis, of which ~10 species are the same as those in the typical early Oligocene Hsanda Gol fauna in Asia.
